Is gallery representation still the ultimate goal?

For decades, gallery representation was the milestone. But I wonder if that landscape has shifted.

The Old Model

Traditionally, galleries curated taste, controlled access, owned collector relationships and determined market positioning. They filtered quality and built careers. But gatekeeping only works when access is scarce.Access is no longer scarce.

The New Reality

Today, artists can:

  • Build direct collector networks

  • Host private previews

  • Release work through digital platforms

  • Collaborate directly with designers and architects

Collectors increasingly value access to the artist and direct dialogue, not just prestige.

So I wonder what Is representation wow?

Perhaps not the ultimate goal. Gallery representation still holds value. But it may no longer be the only marker of seriousness. In an era of direct access, thoughtful artists are building ecosystems, not waiting for validation.
